Our Vision
To develop lifelong Mathematical learners with an ‘Everyone can do Maths, everyone can’ approach.
Maths Intent
Here at Swalecliffe, our children predominantly follow the White Rose Maths Curriculum, with other supporting resources. The White Rose Maths Curriculum is a mastery approach through which we ensure skills are embedded before moving on to the next stage in the child’s mathematical understanding. The aim is that with the right support, guidance and resources, all children can become confident and competent in mathematics. A ‘Teaching for Mastery’ approach is a way of teaching Maths that involves breaking down larger, complex learning goals into smaller steps. There is a clear progression of basic skills from Year R to Year 6 using the White Rose Maths materials. There is a clear progression of basic skills and knowledge from Year R to Year 6 using the White Rose Maths materials and our Calculation Policy:
'Mastering maths means pupils acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.'
The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes classroom practice and school organisation elements that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.
Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.
NCETM 2020
All classrooms have Maths Learning Walls with key vocabulary and sentence stems displayed and used appropriately. The walls are referred to in lessons and often display children’s work and ideas. Teachers nurture an environment where children are allowed to make mistakes as part of their learning, and they promote this as part of the learning process.
